A Rainbow/Pony Birthday Party

Thought I’d share few photos from my daughter’s 4th birthday party.  We had decided on doing a rainbow birthday which I was happy about because it could be very simple to pull off and look cute. I prayed a ton for the weather to be nice since we’d have about 14 kids and having them outside running around would be much less stressful than being crammed in our house.  Thankfully, God was gracious and the weather was pretty perfect.  And crazily with the high being 80 that day, the next day it was wet and the high was probably 40.  It seems it is like that every year for my kids’ parties since they are in the spring and fall…one day it is lovely the next it is miserable…some years we get the good day and some years we don’t.  It makes it hard to know how to plan things.

I’ll go ahead and share the pictures here and if care to read more about the party and the simple ways I made it rainbow-iffic then you can read on afterwards!

Because we were doing rainbows, Audrey kept mentioning it was a Rainbow Dash party (which is a character from My Little Pony).  So, it morphed into being a pony party too.  I kept that part minimal or pretty non existent for the decorations but the Monday of her party I did see a picture of a child riding a pony on Pinterest and wondered why the idea of renting a pony to ride had never occurred to me.  I think it is because no one in our circle of friends has done that before so it wasn’t even on my radar.  Because it was unusual, it felt a bit indulgent, but really it cost about the same as doing a party at a jump house place which people do all the time around here.  The people we ended up using were great and very professional.  The pony was a little bigger than my original vision but it did allow for some of the older kids to ride which a shetland pony wouldn’t because there is like a 45 pound weight limit..or something like that.  This pony had over 100 pound weight limit. I just wanted something that wouldn’t be too huge and intimidating.  There were quite a few kids who were very scared at first but then loved it and the littlest ones seemed happy to avoid it.  But it was definitely a hit and worth the money.

To make it rainbow-y I hung streamers from the trees in our yard.  Our poor yard is pretty bare in March since everything is just thinking about waking up from winter so this added some nice color and was super easy.  Plus Audrey was able to help me with some lower areas.  We did this 20 minutes before the party started since it was super foggy and damp in the morning.

I had also made 3 of the easiest mobiles to hang from our pergola. I bought 3 embroidery hoops from hobby lobby and then just hung streamers in rainbow order from them.  The two hoops are what held the streamers in place and after the party was over I just pulled them out and can now use the hoops again for something else.  I tied yarn to the hoops and quickly hung them to the top of the pergola.  It was very simple but was very pretty blowing in the breeze.

I also used some foam core I had and drew a big 4 on it and cut it out.  I found tissue paper at The Dollar Tree that came in all the colors of the rainbow.  I cut the pieces in squares but didn’t worry about perfection and then hot glued them on.  Oh, and I figured out how big each stripe should be to make them equal and then measured that out and drew on the board since it would be covered up.  I did get burned a few times from the glue but it was a lot faster than trying to use regular white glue and I worried I wouldn’t have enough of that glue anyway.  I was very happy with how it turned out.  I ended up hanging it by a suction hook from our back window that had the table with presents, favors, and other stuff.

I also found a cute horseshoe game set at Hobby Lobby in their summer section.  It was originally around $6 or $7 but was on sale for 50% off.  All the pieces were different colors so it added to the rainbow and pony aspects!  And since it’s made from plastic I didn’t worry about anyone getting hurt from a rogue horseshoe!

My kids got a trampoline for Christmas and that was actually I think the biggest hit of the party.  The kids loved the pony but would have probably been equally happy just jumping the whole time.  We already had blueish/greenish ball years ago and I bought two more from Walmart for $2.50 each that were nice and big.  There was a yellow one with white polka dots and then a pink and orange one with a chevron pattern.  I threw them all on the trampoline to be bright and cheery while the kids jumped.

I almost forgot about the cake!   I kept it simple and bit of a surprise by buying a mix at the grocery store that had everything you needed to make it.  You could totally do it without it though by using your own food coloring.  I also ended up making two cakes so there would be enough for everyone.  I used my bundt cake pan so that when each slice was cut it’d be the shape of a rainbow.  After you make the batter you make six separate bowls of colored batter and then spoon them in one layer at a time.  If you don’t mess with it they stay separate and have nice bright rainbow colors inside.  I just frosted it white on the outside with some candles.  So it was pretty plain until I cut it and wowed everyone.  I had thought of putting one of her plastic ponies on it or next to it but ran out of time and decided it was fine simple.  I tend to mess things up, especially cakes, if I try to do too much.

And that was about it.  Some years I’ve gone a bit crazy with all the food options so this year to really try to keep it simple we went with pizza and some fruit.  The fruit was of course laid out in rainbow order of colors.  And somehow I didn’t take a picture of it.  I seem to always have grand plans of taking pictures and enjoying all the moments with everyone there but spend most of the time running around making sure it is all running smoothly.  Oh well, as long as everyone has a good time, then I am happy.  And I did leave out the pictures of all her friends because I hate to put them out on the internet without permission.

Next year’s party will definitely be more low key (or at least no horses). But it was fun making some great memories with the kids.

So, do you do birthday parties for your kids with friends and go all out?  Or maybe just a couple special friends?  Just family?  Have a favorite party that you’ve done in the past?  I’d love to hear!

Well hello there!  I hate starting off each post lately with appologizing about not writing but hopefully I can start to get back into the swing of things as life is starting to normalize again.  Our little family has had so much sickness these last 4 months.  It’s really been the most challengning part of having 3 kids.  Poor Audrey had some mystery illness that had her throwing up almost daily for a couple months.  We did some tests to see if it was a parasite or UTI and when they came back negative I was almost sad.  I of course didn’t want her to have those things but they are easily treatable and we would know what was causing so many problems.  Strangely enough though, once we got back the results she stopped throwing up and hasn’t since.  Of course a week later and she had some other thing with a cough and fever and then an ear infection (the first one any of our kids has had).  But I think, knock on wood, that everyone is well!  Praise the Lord!  We’ll see how long it lasts.  I have never missed so much church in all my life.  The kids seemed to take turns every week having a fever on Saturday or Sunday so I had to stay home with them.  Our kids have always been relatively healthy, just getting runny noses etc, so this was really insane.  It seems that everyone has been dealing with a lot of illnesses this winter though.

I had a really busy Christmas season with selling my personalized ornaments.  My wonderful husband was so nice to help me with pretty much anything that wasn’t sewing.  I couldn’t have gotten it done sanely without him.  To thank him for all his help I gave him (and the kids) a surprise quick trip to CO for his birthday.  His birthday is right after Christmas so it always gets kind of mixed up in all the holiday stuff.  It was really fun to pull off but also a bit stressful with all the sickness.  I really didn’t know if we were going to have to cancel the trip but thankfully everyone was well enough to go and we had a great time.  I really wanted the kids to see snow, a mountain, and ride an airplane.  So we went to Colorado Springs, CO to go up Pikes Peak. There wasn’t a ton of snow everywhere but for two kids who have only ever seen central TX snow it was a lot!  They cried when we had to get back on the train down the mountain and leave all the snow.  We stayed in a beautiful hotel that had a gas fireplace and awesome views.  We had a bunny that lived next to our patio and also saw a mule deer and 2 coyotes.   The hotel was The Lodge at The Garden of the Gods.  Oh, and the kids did awesome on the 4 flights we took.

The thing that has kept me most busy and quiet around here from January on has been drawing digital illustrations.  Ken got me a Wacom stylus pad thingy last year but due to being pregnant which made me sick or tired, trying to get ready for the baby, and sewing items for my shop, I didn’t really get a chance to use it.  This year I got a fancy schmancy new Epson wide format printer so I can now FINALLY print my own art – and let me tell you, the quality is awesome.  I am so excited because now I have more control over how they look and can also experiment more because I won’t have to have stock just sitting in my house waiting to be sold.  I can draw something and list it and if it doesn’t sell I haven’t lost much.  And speaking of which, just today I listed most of the pieces of art I have been making.  I still have a few more that need some finally tweaks that’ll go up in the next few days.

Most of the prints can be personalized with a child’s name have different color options.  Some of the art can be given tell those close to you, ‘I love you’.  I am pretty excited about them and hope you like them too.  I am starting out with 8 x 10’s but hope to offer 5 x 7’s as well as 11 x 14’s very soon.

It’s a….

BOY!

We welcomed William Hudson into the world on September 27 at 5:18 pm.  He was so polite to arrive on his own on his due date.  He weighed 8 pounds 14 ounces and was 20 3/4 inches long.

So, the 75% of you who guessed boy were right!  Now you win the grand prize of a pat on the back.

We got to go home Saturday afternoon and are happy to be back with the kids and my parents.

I started this post a couple days ago but due to a terrible headache which after being told to go to the ER is most likely from my epidural and will be fine, I didn’t feel up to looking at a computer screen.  I am feeling a ton better already and hopefully the fluids and caffeine will help it all go away faster.  I do have to go back to my dr. in a few days since they want to check on a couple numbers that were elevated just to make sure it isn’t the rare instance of preeclampsia after a pregnancy…who knew?!  Anyway, besides all that drama we are doing great and everything else about my recovery is better than the other pregnancies.  I’ll update more info and photos on William asap.  I just wanted to let you guys know that he did arrive and we are well.

And the winner is…

A little of this and that

Woah, I just had a mini heart attack.  I was at the store to buy some socks to make a couple more custom yaks and when I got up to the counter I realized that my wallet wasn’t in my purse.  I had just had it last night and couldn’t figure out where it would be.  I looked everywhere in the car and then when I got home but it was no where.  Thankfully, I checked the car one more time and it was hiding under the front of Audrey’s carseat where her feet hang off.  I think I took it away from her last night while I buckled her in since she was chewing on it.  Since it was dark I forgot about it and even today it blended in with the seat and I couldn’t see it.  I am so thankful I found it!  What a pain it would be to replace everything in it!

Now on to other things.  On my way to the store today I suddenly spied a Krispy Kreme store!  Where did that come from and how long has it been there?  I don’t even know if it is open yet but I am very excited.  I probably won’t eat there much but just knowing it is in town gives me comfort.  I have fond memories of just my dad and I going out to eat a donut or two all by ourselves.  I’d get a zebra donut (chocolate with white stripes drizzled on top) and he’d get chocolate.

Is anyone else afraid of taking a shower when there is lightning outside or is it just me?  I am always freaked out and avoid it if possible.  And if I happen to have to take one during a thunderstorm (like this morning) I keep picturing what it would feel like to have electricity shock my whole wet body.  So, I take them as fast as possible.  Crazy, I know.  But it has happened to people before.  So, better to be safe than sorry.  Do you have any fears that are a bit crazy?  I want to hear so I know I’m not alone.

I am going through all of our pictures which is very daunting to finally catch up on our photo books.  We got a free photo book from Snapfish a few years ago when the Oprah show was giving them for free.  And we decided to make a book of each year of our kids lives.  Well we made that one, but have yet to do any more.  So I have been collecting photos for the next 3 years of Josiah’s life and then I’ll do Audrey’s first year.  Snapfish has been good and has lots of discounts so we wait until we find the best one possible and then buy.  We have used them to make photo calendars for family and other photo books that show the kids and their artwork for Christmas presents.  It is great for grandparents since they typically don’t need anything.

As I was going through the photos I came across this one that is accidently funny.  It is from earlier this year.  Look how Josiah looks like he is holding his Papa like a little doll.  hee hee.

And finally, here is a video that shows a super cool and easy way to tie a knot for hand sewing.  I am loving it!

Crap Trap

Disclaimer: I edited this photo. You can see the original by clicking on it. I am sure it is a delightful place to eat. And it isn't the same one Nannie refers to.

Ok, I can’t stop laughing.  Ken’s Grandma (Nannie) told me over a facebook message that she had gone out to eat with some friends at the Crap Trap.  I wrote her back and asked if that was a real name for a restaurant. I thought it was kind of odd, especially for a food place, but people come up with all kinds of funny names.  She just wrote back and said that she just couldn’t spell and it was a nice place called the Crab Trap.  What a difference a letter can make.  She said Grandpa Steve was getting a good laugh. I couldn’t stop giggling when I read that and Josiah kept asking what was so funny.  So, if any of you wants to open a new restaurant called the Crap Trap, I guess it is available.

The Gift of Words

I saw this on Pinterest yesterday and it made me laugh.

This would be a really fun way to tell a friend happy birthday.  Each one of those cards are individual postcards sent by 25 friends to the birthday girl or guy.  Put them together like a puzzle and you get a fun message and lots of happy thoughts from all the friends on the back.  Jordan always comes up with the coolest ways to celebrate.  I want to do it myself at some point.  Maybe one of you will be the lucky recipient!

Speaking of mail, Giverslog has a series called happy mail. In it she is mailing all kinds of creative gifts that are 13 ounces or less.  How fun would it be to see one of those items sitting in your mailbox!

And finally I shared this before on my facebook page but I just love it so much I have to share it again.  These printable alphabet buntings have been used at both of my kids birthday parties.  (The first picture is from Josiah’s third birthday and the second is from Audrey’s first birthday.)  I just reused the Happy Birthday letters and then printed out a few extra letters for their names.  Can’t wait to pull them out and use them again.

Highs and Lows

Well, today has been a really terrible day.  And what makes it even worse is that it started out so great.

I was blessed to live with 3 amazing girls (Beth, Shannon, and Brianne) for the first years of college.  We then added an extra 2 (Becky and Merewyn) our senior year as we got to live in a house together.  We are like family and keep up with each other mostly through the internet but also talk on the phone or see each other from time to time.  Half of us still live in TX and the others live all over the US.  Beth, my main roommate, had to fly to TX unexpectedly to go to her uncle’s funeral and the airport near my house was the cheapest way to get to it.   I got a call from her asking if she could spend the night at my house since she was getting in at midnight.  I  haven’t seen her in 5 years since our 5 year college reunion.  It was so fun to spend the morning with her and her youngest child.  She hadn’t met either of my kids and I had only met the oldest of her 4.  I felt terrible for her loss but was thankful that it meant we got an unexpected time to see each other.  I love how you can be with someone like that and it feels like no time has passed since you last saw them.

A couple hours after she left I got a call I wish I never would have gotten.  Becky called to tell that me Shannon passed away.  We don’t know all the details yet but they believe it may have been diabetes related.   She was such a fun and happy person and a great friend.  She loved to laugh and make people laugh.  She loved playing jokes on people so much that even as I was hearing the news and knew it was real I was waiting to hear that it was just a joke.  I am kind of in a fog and still processing it all and so don’t really have the words to say to really do her justice.  She will be greatly missed by so many.  Thankfully, she loved the Lord and so I know she is in a better place now and I will see her again one day.  I love you Shannon.

Pleasant Surprise

I love surprises…well, good ones anyway.  I really don’t like not so great ones that throw off my plan for the day or life.  Not that I’m a big planner.  Oh, and when people sneak up behind me and scare me, nope, don’t like that either.  But yesterday I had one of the pleasant little surprises.  My shop was included with 9 other adorable baby shops on Babble.com. Yippee!   Jacinda from Prudent Baby was nice enough  to put me on the list.  I am a huge fan of all things Prudent Baby and have been lucky to have my sock animals shown a few times by the lovely ladies on their site.  If you are not already a fan you must definitely go check it out!

And what about you guys, do you like surprises?

Testing, Testing…is this thing on?!

Hi! I’m Jocelyn, the sole owner/creator/maker etc, etc of The Nesting Spot.    I am finally dipping my toes into the world of blogging.  (Please be patient with me as I figure out this new-to-me medium.)  I started my shop in the midst of my burst of energy in the 2nd trimester of being pregnant with my daughter and since it was filled with items to fulfill your nesting desires, it got the name it has.  Most of my free time is taken up with making sock animals for everyone else but occasionally I do actually  make something for my own kids!  So, I figured on this blog I could share those things along with behind the scenes stuff and new items from The Nesting Spot.  Oh, and I’ll share all the other great ideas out there on the web for making a cozy home for you and your kids that are cool, easy to do, and cheap!  I would love it if you would stick around.  I love lots of fun ideas of things to share.

Thanks so much!

Jocelyn
